This year 2015 was sort of mixed bag for the bollywood film industry. More than 200 films were released and around 65 were recognized by the box office and audience. There were many unexpected hit films that did pretty well in the box office to very much expected films that give nothing but the disappointment to the box office.
This is the year where popular superstars like Salman Khan (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), Ajay Devgan (Drishyam) and Askhay Kumar (Baby) did their critically best films ever. And the veteran directors like Anurag Kashyap (Bombay Velvet), Madhur Bhandarkar (Calender Girls) and R.Balki (Shamitabh) shown their worst performance till date. So here are the top 10 films of the bollywood for the year of 2015 as per me. Sorry if you didn’t find your favorite movie in this list.
10. Titli (IMDB: 7.3)
In the badlands of Delhi’s dystopic underbelly, Titli (Shashank Arora), the youngest member of a violent car-jacking brothers (Ranvir Shorey), plots a desperate bid to escape the the brothers and wants to do respectable job. Titli finds an unlikely ally in his new wife,though she is caught in her own web of warped reality and dysfunctional dreams of her married boyfriend. There are some difficult to watch violent scenes that can make uncomfortable to majority of audience.
9. Bajirao Mastani (IMDB: 7.0)
A movie that took 15 years to come from the mind of Sanjay Leela Bhansali to the release date. An epic historical romantic melodrama of 18th century India. Bajirao I (Ranveer Singh), the second hereditary Peshwa of the Maratha Empire and daughter of Bundela Rajput warrior Mastani (Deepika Padukone) fall in love each other after fighting a battle against Mughals. The movie is masterpiece when it comes to beautiful set, classic music and costumes and compared classics like Umrao Jaan and Mughal-e-Azam, but the story is quite made up and cliched away from real history for making to more dramatic. Ranveer-Deepika chemistry did really well throught the film.
8. BABY (IMDB: 8.1)
A team of secret agents BABY who work for Indian Ministry of Defence for a 5 year temporary task force headed by Danny Denzongpa formed in response to the 2008 Mumbai attacks whose job is to find and eliminate terrorists who are planning attacks in India. Akshya Kumar and Tapsee Panu were in totally no bullshit roles for can do anything to save their country. Although some of the elements were inspired from Inglorious Bastards, Zero Dark Thirty and Argo, but that’s bollyright.
7. Masaan (IMDB: 8.1)
The plot of Masaan follows two seemingly separate story arcs of Banaras that eventually converge.
In first, story of a girl Devi (Richha Chadda) who blackmailed by police for her boyfriend who committed suicide in bathroom when they get caught in having pre-marital sex in a hotel room. Devi’s father Vidyadhar Pathak (Sanjay Mishra) tries to protect her daughter by giving demanded bribe to officer. He did outstanding serious drama as we only know him for his comic roles.
In second, story of an engineering student Deepak (Vicky Koshal) from a low-caste corpse burner family working funeral pyres at ghat. He falls in love with a high caste girl Shaalu (Shweta Tripathi).
6. Dum Laga Ke Haisha (IMDB: 7.5)
This is the only and the best comedy film in my list for this year.
Main character Prem (Ayshmann Khurana), a highschool dropout, hesitantly marries an educated but overweight girl, Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar). However, the couple come closer when they take part in a race, which involves Prem carrying Sandhya on his back. The movie has shows authentic linguistic and cultural influences of Uttar Pradhesh. Prem’s father (Sanjay Mishra) played a very hilarious role who can make you roll on the floor all the time.
5. Manjhi: The Mountain Man (IMDB: 8.3)
Manjhi is a biopic, based on the life of Dashrath Manjhi, widely known as the “Mountain Man”. He was a poor labourer from a small village of Bihar who broke a 360 feet long, 25 feet deep in places and 30 feet wide mountain using in 22 years with only a hammer and chisel. Just because his beloved wife died because of that. His work is more beautiful than The Taj Mahal. Moral of the film is if a person has will power, he can do anything in the world. Also, don’t be responsible on others, what if others are responsible on you too.
4. Badlapur (IMDB: 7.5)
The axe forgets but the tree remembers. Badlapur, don’t miss the beginning is one the top revenge movie made in bollywood after GoW.
Story is about Raghu’s (Varun Dhawan) unblemished life is shattered when he loses his wife and son. Victims of a bank heist, they both succumb to their injuries. Raghu takes on a journey to avenge their deaths. Varun Dhawan in all his previous films only appeared as a funny next door mischievous character. But for the first time he proved that he can be play a no non-sense psycho killer character of a 40 year old man. For Nawazuddin, I have no words to define level of brilliant actor for this role.
3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (IMDB: 8.3)
Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi alias Bajrangi, an ardent devotee of a Hindu deity, Hanuman, who embarks on taking a six-year old Pakistani girl Munni ( Harshali Malhotra) separated in India from her parents. He faces numerous challenges when he tries to reunite Munni with her family after she gets lost while travelling back home with her mother.
From the story to screenplay, music to comedy everything was delivered great throughout the movie. Nawazduddin comes after the half, played a role of struggling journalist who captures all the moments of Bajrangi for his lovely motive. The moral of this film was love is beyond religion and nation.
2. Talvar (IMDB: 8.5)
The film is based on the 2008 Noida double murder case, in which a teenage girl and her family servant were found murdered, and her parents were convicted for the murders. The Lunchbox starring Irrfan Khan did pretty well in this film as a CBI inspector. The film basically sort out the how badly Indian police control, investigation units and judiciary system works in an unprofessional way due to corruption and rusting in the system.
1. Drishyam (IMDB: 8.8)
A 5th standard pass yet an intelligent man, Vijay (Ajay Devgan) runs a successful business and loves his family. When a dark incident threatens to ruin his family, he desperately tries to protect them at all costs. The film have one of the best story and screenplay I have seen in Indian film. Although it is a remake of Tamil film, but all actors including Ajay, Tabu and specially that little girl Anu (Mrunal Jadhav) performed extremely well. The moral of the film is nothing is right or wrong to prove when it comes to protecting your family.
